The classic post-training recovery drink recommended across nearly every one of our sport guides — milk naturally provides the combined protein and carbohydrate our recovery guidance calls for, and it's genuinely one of the most well-evidenced recovery drinks for exactly this reason, not just a treat framing.
Ingredients
- 250ml semi-skimmed milk (or fortified dairy-free alternative)
- 1-2 tbsp cocoa powder or drinking chocolate powder
- 1 tsp honey (optional, for extra sweetness)
- Handful of ice (optional)
Method
- Add the milk, cocoa powder and honey (if using) to a blender or shaker bottle.
- Blend or shake thoroughly until combined.
- Add ice if a colder drink is preferred, and blend again briefly.
Why this works for young athletes
Milk's natural combination of carbohydrate (lactose) and protein makes it an effective recovery drink within the 30-60 minute post-training window our sport guides consistently highlight — alongside calcium, which matters throughout childhood and especially during the growth-spurt years (see Support Growth). Making it at home rather than buying a branded recovery drink keeps sugar content in your control and costs a fraction of the price.
Good for
Post-match and post-training recovery, any sport, ages 6-16 — a genuinely reliable, low-effort way to build a consistent recovery habit.
