Built for exactly the scenario our tournament, gala and multi-bout competition guides describe again and again: a full day of events with unpredictable gaps between them, where having snacks and water ready throughout the day matters more than any single pre-event meal. A batch of these covers a whole weekend of fixtures.
Ingredients
- 200g rolled oats
- 100g butter or dairy-free spread
- 80g honey or golden syrup
- 50g dried fruit (raisins or chopped dates)
- Pinch of cinnamon (optional)
Method
- Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a small baking tray with parchment.
- Melt the butter and honey together gently in a pan.
- Stir in the oats, dried fruit and cinnamon until well combined.
- Press firmly into the tray and bake for 18-20 minutes until golden.
- Cool completely before cutting into 12 bars. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
Why this works for young athletes
Oats provide steady, longer-lasting carbohydrate compared with a sugary shop-bought bar, and dried fruit adds a natural sweetness plus a quick-access carbohydrate boost between matches or bouts — exactly the "small, easily-digested snack" our Rugby, Judo and Karate guides all recommend over a large meal on a multi-event competition day. Making a batch at home also means knowing exactly what's in them, and it's considerably cheaper than buying individually wrapped bars for a whole team.
Good for
Tournament and festival days, swimming galas, judo and karate competitions — anywhere a young athlete needs portable fuel across several hours, ages 8-16.
