A genuinely easy, low-effort dinner for evenings after a demanding training session or match, when nobody has the energy for a complicated meal but recovery nutrition still matters. Beans and cheese between them cover both carbohydrate and protein, with calcium from the cheese as a bonus.
Ingredients
- 2 medium baking potatoes
- 1 tin baked beans
- 50g grated cheddar cheese
- 2 tbsp Greek yoghurt or soured cream (optional)
- Spring onion, chopped (optional)
Method
- Prick the potatoes and bake at 200°C for around an hour until soft, or microwave on high for 8-10 minutes, turning halfway.
- Heat the baked beans in a small pan or microwave.
- Split the potatoes open, top with beans and grated cheese, and finish with yoghurt and spring onion if using.
Why this works for young athletes
The potato provides a substantial carbohydrate base to replenish energy stores after a hard session, while beans and cheese add protein to support muscle repair — see our Build Strength guide for more on why food-based protein sources like this work as well as, or better than, a shake. It's also a genuinely practical option on evenings when a demanding training day (see our Rugby and Boxing guides on recovery after contact sessions) leaves little time or energy for cooking.
Good for
Post-training and post-match dinners, particularly after contact sports, ages 8-16 — microwave version cuts prep to under 15 minutes on a busy evening.
