A genuinely familiar, easy-to-batch-cook pre-match meal that works across almost every contact and combat sport we cover — a light tomato sauce keeps the fat content low enough to digest comfortably before kickoff, sparring, or a bout, which our Boxing and Rugby guides both flag as particularly important for contact sports specifically.
Ingredients
- 300g wholemeal or regular pasta
- 2 chicken breasts, sliced thin
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tin chopped tomatoes
- 1 clove garlic, crushed
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- Grated parmesan, to serve (optional)
Method
- Cook the pasta according to packet instructions.
- Heat the olive oil in a pan and cook the chicken through for 6-8 minutes.
- Add the garlic and chopped tomatoes, season with oregano, and simmer for 8-10 minutes.
- Combine with the drained pasta and serve, with parmesan if using.
Why this works for young athletes
Pasta is a reliable, easily-digested carbohydrate source that most kids already eat regularly — familiarity matters as much as nutrition content for a pre-match meal, since an unfamiliar dish is a common cause of matchday stomach upset. The light tomato-based sauce keeps this lower in fat than a creamy alternative, supporting faster digestion before a physically demanding session.
Good for
Pre-match meals for contact and combat sports specifically (rugby, boxing, kickboxing, judo, karate), also fine for any sport, ages 8-16 — freezes well in portions for a quick pre-match reheat.
